A Yoga Practice Beyond the Postures

Karmuka Yoga’s philosophy invites you to integrate physical practice with breathing,
attention and self-knowledge. Postures are not an isolated goal: they offer an opportunity
to observe your relationship with effort, rest and your own limits.

This approach also includes concepts from the yoga tradition. You can explore them in
Yoga as Revolution,
where we reflect on the five koshas, Patanjali’s eight limbs and the relationship
between ethics and practice.

Alignment, Supportive Props and Personalized Attention

Every body has a different history. That is why supportive props and posture variations
are part of the way we teach.

  • Supportive props:
ropes, chairs, blocks, straps, blankets, bolsters and tools from methods such as Yamuna Body Rolling
or Critical Alignment allow you to explore different ways of practicing.
  • Adapting the practice:
guidance is tailored to each practitioner’s experience and abilities,
without requiring everyone to achieve an identical outward form.
  • Breathing and body awareness:
paying attention to movement and breathing helps you recognize how you are practicing
and when you need to modify or rest.

If you have an injury, have recently undergone surgery or have a specific need, let us know
before starting so we can consider which option may be suitable for you.

Yoga, Wellbeing and Research: An Open Dialogue

The relationship between yoga, posture and brain activity is part of the research
associated with Karmuka Yoga. This allows us to approach the practice through questions,
observation and attention to the limits of the evidence.

For example, you can read the
published protocol on using fNIRS to study prefrontal cortex activity during yoga practice.
A protocol describes how to study an intervention; it does not, on its own,
demonstrate all of its potential benefits.

In class, we work with movement, breathing, attention and body awareness.
Each person’s experience and the changes they observe may vary.
The findings of a particular study do not constitute a guarantee of individual improvement.
