SEPTEMBER 26TH YOGA ASANA AND YOUR BREATH WORKSHOP: Levels 1 -4
The purpose of Yoga Asana (postures) is to prepare the body for Pranayama (breath practice). By opening and preparing the body with various yogic postures the yoga student can begin to observe and enjoy the benefits of a full and complete breath on all systems of the mind body complex.
Yoga asana is not an external process, but rather an internal perception of internal action and relaxation that allows the spine to lengthen and the ribcage to open. The process of Yoga Asana works with more than just the physical system of the body, it also affects the respiratory and nervous system – including the functioning of the brain. There are many details of Yoga asana that a student must perceive to be able to gain all the multi-layer benefits of each yoga asana. Without observing the movement of our breath in the physical forms of asana, the deep layered benefits of asana on the nervous system is lost and the practice of Yoga becomes nothing more than gymnastics.
Correctly aligning the body from the inside out to open the respiratory system takes a great deal of awareness and perception. The focus is subtle action rather than external physical action. To help students perceive these subtleties, students will be taken through various modifications and adaptations of Yoga Asana and Pranayama integrated with the work of Yamuna Body Rolling. Students will feel from the inside out how to optimally align and activate feet, pelvis, spine, shoulders and skull to move the prana (life energy/breath) in order to positively affect all systems of the mind and body.
